Alicia: My Vacation Scheme experience

29th June 2016 | 15:13

After studying History at the University of Newcastle and completing both the GDL and LPC in Leeds, Alicia sat in CMS’ Corporate team on her vacation scheme

I spent my vacation scheme sitting in the Corporate team, which is the firm’s largest department. This meant I was able to get involved in the same huge variety of work a trainee would typic
ally undertake –something that I really enjoyed. As part of my role, I helped my trainee buddy prepare for a completion that’s due to take place next week. Together, we collated the Share Purchase Agreements and other ancillary documents for signing and thoroughly checked that they had all been executed correctly. After that, I was lucky enough to attend the dry run through the completion with the other side’s lawyers, which helped me understand all the different mechanics of the procedure.

Outside department work, CMS arranged for those of us on the vacation scheme to attend presentations from each of firm’s practice groups and CSR & Diversity. This was a great opportunity to gain an invaluable insight into the type of work the different departments do, and how they work together.

I also had the opportunity to socialise with different members of the firm at a number of different events organised by the amazing graduate recruitment team. On day one we were invited to a drinks reception with trainees and associates this was a great way to get to know our fellow vac schemers and some of the fee earners. Later in the scheme we went cocktail making and were also taken out for a 4-course dinner at Urban Coterie on the seventeenth floor of M By Montcalm Shoreditch.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CMS – the work was both challenging and interesting and my team did an excellent job of involving me as much as possible. As a result, I feel like I now have a much better understanding of the firm’s culture and the work its lawyers undertake.

You can learn a lot about a law firm from brochures, websites and on-campus presentations, but nothing comes close to experiencing it first-hand. Find out what our two-week Vacation Schemes has to offer.
