Emily: My Vacation Scheme experience

1st July 2016 | 17:15

Emily is part-way through a law degree at the University of Warwick. She spent her vacation scheme sitting in the Corporate team.

Completing a vacation scheme at CMS was both a new and an interesting experience for me.

From the moment I entered the offices I felt welcome and the help and advice continued throughout my whole two weeks. As well as presentations about life as a trainee and life as a newly qualified lawyer, I was able to attend talks held by the different practice groups at CMS. These talks were really informative and gave me a valuable insight into how seat selection and secondments actually work, as well as how to apply for them. On top of all that, I was able to find out a bit more about the work-life balance and how CSR, diversity and inclusion are encouraged at the firm.

The graduate recruitment department were really welcoming and put on a number of different socials. The most memorable one for me was the cocktail making experience – which was a brilliant opportunity to talk to current trainees as well as the graduate recruitment team themselves – but we also got an amazing 3-course meal during the second week.

As a vacation schemer at CMS you can expect to be exposed to a truly broad range of work. Sitting in the Corporate department, I was able to get involved in client calls, drafting letters and checking contract terms – it really felt like I was part of the team. There’s also the opportunity to work and collaborate with the other departments and I was in contact with the Banking, Energy, Employment and Environment teams. The atmosphere is really friendly and you sit in a group of four in a very open plan office, so you could be sat next to just about anyone, including partners. Plus everyone comes to introduce themselves, meaning you quickly get to know people specialising in a variety of areas.

Overall, working at CMS has been an excellent opportunity to experience a global commercial law firm – especially one that fosters a warm culture and gives its vacation schemers excellent support.

You can learn a lot about a law firm from brochures, websites and on-campus presentations, but nothing comes close to experiencing it first-hand. Find out what our two-week Vacation Schemes has to offer.
